Mid Year Favorites 2021: Mystery and Thriller

Hi and welcome to the reading world!

Today is the final installment of my Mid Year Favorites! If you’re curious to see what other genres I’ve read and loved so far this year, check out the books I featured for Sci Fi/Fantasy and Contemporary/Literary Fiction!

Mysteries and thrillers are definitely not the genres I’ve read the most of, and so I only have 2 books to spotlight for today’s post. However, as I figure out my reading wheelhouse within these genres (and maybe even try reading some horror novels this fall?) my hope is that by the end of the year I’ll have found a bunch of new favorites in these genres! For now, let’s get to the 2 I read and enjoyed in the first half of 2021!

Passing by Nella Larsen

Passing is a book that’s difficult to classify into a genre, but there are definitely some major plot twists and suspenseful elements in the story. This one follows the chance encounter of two old friends, one of who is passing as white. There is a lot of tension in this story and although brief, it’s definitely a page turner.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ninth House is an urban fantasy with secret societies and a murder mystery. All of these elements come together to make a unique and memorable story that kept me guessing and also had a lot of creepy and unsettling atmospheric moments. I’m curious to see where this series goes next!

So, based on my reading so far, I tend to like mysteries and thrillers that have elements of other genres in them. I’m not a huge fan of domestic thrillers, but suspense and psychological thrillers are an area I’ve yet to read much of. Do you have any recommendations? If so, feel free to leave a comment below with what thrillers and mysteries I should pick up next!

Thank you for stopping by and celebrating my mid year favorites with me! I’m so excited to have gotten to look back on my reading year so far this way, and hope that the rest of 2021 is filled with more great reads!
